introduction

Created for the Real-Time 3D Multimedia elective, Life Out Of Balance is a real-time 3D "demo" based upon the changing climate of our world today.

Real-Time 3D Multimedia
The Real-Time 3D Multimedia elective aims to introduce the principles of real-time 3D multimedia production and authoring. Real-Time 3D multimedia is at the core of today's games, websites, virtual reality applications, and interactive applications. As a result, it is important for creative application designers to be aware of the principles behind real-time 3D multimedia, including computer graphics principles and rendering techniques.

The final project for this elective was to develop a data-driven 3D real-time demo using the Virtools application.

Demoscene
The demoscene is a computer art subculture that specializes itself on producing "demos". A demo is a non-interactive audio-visual presentation, which run in real-time on a computer.

The "data-driven" demo uses a group of datasets to govern the production of the demoscene. Datasets can be static or dynamic. Dynamic datasets (i.e. datasets which change over time, such as Stock Market data, or Weather Data) can be used to visually alter the appearance of the demo, each time it is run.

The goal of producing a data-driven demo is to create a demo that is both aesthetically impressive, but also informative and cohesive.
