The new SciTech Library, being built between the Wilkinson Building and the Wentworth Building is going to be host to a multitude of currently existing libraries from within Sydney University.  These libraries will mainly represent three faculties – Science, Architecture and Engineering.  Our group’s installation pits these three faculties against each other in a quiz.  Each faculty will have a mini-forest of plants which represents them, as shown on the right.

We’ve set up a system that waters these plants whenever a member from that plant’s faculty gets a question correct, that is the little motor on top of the green canisters that you can see above.  The quiz will run in Adobe Flash, with some code running in the background that activates the motors that water the plants whenever the user of the installation gets an answer correct.  The user answers the question by using the mouse that’s on the desk in front of the installation, see the next image.  After running through the quiz the installation resets for the next person.  The actual quiz runs on a screen projecting just above the physical installation.

Our group’s installation is designed to run on the wall that is facing the entrance of the library (see figure 2).  We are only going to use one half of the wall, as using any more of the wall space will detract from our physical aesthetics.

The actual quiz will be on questions related to the three faculties. We’ve done this with the intention of making the students aware of the other faculties, whilst also encouraging them to socialise, learn and interact with each other.

Here is a short video of a person interacting with the installation:
