Melbourne is Australia's second largest city, with a population of about 3.9 million. It is the capital city of the Australian state of Victoria. Melbourne is notable for its lively arts and culture, striking architecture, extensive parklands, broad boulevards and one of the largest tram networks in the world.

Melbourne's arts precinct has many auditoria, and includes those of the newly opened Melbourne Recital Centre, which houses two auditoria both with major surfaces designed for acoustic diffusion.

Air travel between Sydney and Melbourne is inexpensive, with frequent flights offered by Qantas, Virgin Blue and Jetstar. Travel by road takes at least one full day, and travel by train takes about 12 hours.
