Assignment 6
"2D Digital Drafting " - or "Rendering"

[Handout: 7.05.07 / Handin: 19.05.07 18:00]

In the following assignments (#6 and 7) you choose either of the two offered assignments ('Drafting' or 'Rendering').

A) 2D Digtial Drafting:

In this assignment you are asked to create standard 2D-architectural plans of your design created in your Design Studio. Using CAAD software (ArchiCAD; AutoCAD; Maya; Rhino; Revit; 3DS, etc.), and you save your layout as a PDF-file, or alternatively as 'DWF'-file and prepare a webbased presentation.

The objective of this assignment is to create an architectural presentation of your Design, using 2D information (Vector drawings). The communication of your design must represent your architectural design as well as fit standard architectural drawing conventions.

  1. Begin by setting up the drawings extents (limits), units (metric), grid, snap, and layers.

  2. Draw your design in at least 1 plan, 1 section, and 1 elevation - so that it is understandable. Use real dimensions! Choose an appropriate scale for detailing. Assign hatches (textures and coloured faces) to the different parts of your plans in order to understand form and function. You may want to use a scan as 'underlay' to trace the plans or you translate the dimension directly from the drawing. If you apply dimensions make sure that the scales are placed correctly and cover details as well as overall dimensions.

  3. Once the drawing is complete, check that you have properly assigned the line-widths and line types in your drawing.

  4. If you want you can additionally create a rendered view of your design.

  5. Compose the drawings on a Layout-View and save it as a Web-file [dwf], which you find in the Plot- or Export menu of AutoCAD. Then save your file then as PDF.

  6. Safe your layout-drawings of your design and the original model-files into your a6-folder of DESA2001.

  7. Start Photoshop and create a thumbnail-image with a resolution of 64 * 64 pixels with 72 DPI and save this small image as " t6.jpg " inside your ' a6'-folder (this thumbnail must represent the assignment!).

  8. Start Dreamweaver / GoLive / etc. and create a webpage and save it as ' index.htm ' inside the ' a6'-folder. Briefly describe your composition and place a link to your web-file of your CAAD-drawing (PDF-file or DWF- File).

  9. Finally, add all the necessary links to be able to browse back and forth in your site.

B) Rendering

  1. Create a 'possible photorealistic' or 'architectural stylized' rendering of a scene of your your earlier assignments or your studio project, lit, textured and rendered in e.g. in 3D Studio, FormZ or Maya. It is important that you expore the possibilities the software and your skill offer you and you are encouraged to study the online tutorials.

  2. Upload at least one image JEPG-format and your original model-file.

  3. In Photoshop fix the preview for your Webpage; set the resolution of the image at 100% to 72 DPI only! Save the resulting images in JPEG-format (with .jpg extension) in 'medium-quality' inside your " a6'"folder in your course-folder. Create a thumbnail of 64 * 64 pixels with 72 DPI and save this image as " t6.jpg " inside your ' a6'-folder

  4. Finally create a webpage and save it as " index.htm " inside the a6-folder. Describe shortly your work and place your JPEG-images on that page. Add all the necessary links to be able to browse back and forth in your site.
